Does this encourage more Qatari involvement in the reform initiative?
Chaired by Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al Misnad, the Supreme Education Council Executive Committee issued a decision in its 13th meeting held on 30/01/2006 to increase salaries of all Qatari employees in Independent schools to encourage more Qatari involvement in the reform initiative. The decision came as a tribute to all Qatari Teachers in recognition of their role in implementing the initiative objectives.

In this context, Her Excellency the Minister of Education, Sheikha Ahmed Al- Mahmoud said "Teachers deserve all support and respect for their role in shaping the new generations and empowering them with knowledge and ideals. They are to be valued for the efforts they extend to obtain flow of information and achieve better communications with the surroundings.”

Education Institute Director, Sabah Al Haidous, informed that the decision came in response to comprehensive study conducted by the institute to assess the salary structure of Qatari staff in independent schools in comparison with their colleagues in other ministries and official institutions. The salary increase will maintain rights and privileges for Qatari staff in Independent Schools to enjoy same living standards of their partners in other official sectors.

The Director of Education said that 1500 Qatari employees in the Independent Schools will benefit from the increase of QR 2600 in salaries. She hoped that the hike will increase or even double the number of employees and thus achieve the ultimate Qatarization plan set in independent schools.

I think that giving only Qatari teachers a raise is completely unacceptable. First of all, some of our Qatari staff members do not exert the same effort as displayed by our other staff members of various nationalities. This will decrease morale amongst these staff members who have been working extremely hard at their jobs and have fully dedicated themselves to improve educational standards for Qatari children. A better method to implement the salary increase would be to give each school an allotted sum to be used at the operator's discretion. That way, the Qatari's who deserve this raise and have earned it, will receive it. This also encourages lack of motivation amongst our Qatari staff as they are being rewarded for something that they did not earn. What are we "teaching" our Qatari teachers? For the Qatari staff who have worked hard, put in the extra effort and taken the initiative to be an excellent teacher/assistant/staff member, is it unfair to them that they work extremely hard and their co-workers who are less committed and less productive receive the same raise.

Absolutely agreed with, not that i work in an independent school, i work in a private one but ,yes it is very demotivating to the teachers who are paid less because of their passport or Asian Origin , although they are exerting the same , in fact more effort than the foriegners(so called native speakers) here

I think it's great that Qatari teachers in independent schools are being given salary increases. The thing is, how about teachers working in independent schools but are of a different nationality? I think it's quite unfair that they are not going to receive a salary increase just because they are not Qatari. In this entry, it is stated that Sheikha Ahmed Al- Mahmoud said "Teachers deserve all support and respect for their role in shaping the new generations and empowering them with knowledge and ideals. They are to be valued for the efforts they extend to obtain flow of information and achieve better communications with the surroundings. Yet, what about the teachers who extend their efforts and give so much of themselves just to educate more young minds? Is the fact that they are not Qatari enough of a reason for them not to be given a salary increase that they very well deserve?

I totally agree and am really disappointed that a so called equality claiming country pays its teachers according to the colour of their skin, passport, race!!!!!what sort of discrimination is this? we teach Qatari children who are the future of this country and why are we paid less than so called native english speakers ? It really is against our religion and any human rights ethics

ok, native english speakers are also paid less than Qatari teachers. Qatari teachers are not prepared for work....They are not to blame at all its the decission makers money is not a motivator, where I taught having a Qatari teacher, a sin if you call them an ASSISTANT was more a problem than a help.
Don't take it that I have any thing against the Qatari teachers its just they are not prepared for the position they are given and its too easy for them, they just turn up and get paid opps did I say turn up, they hardly turn up for class. Love to all my Qatari Ladies but just noting the truth and this is from the Director- teachers so what to expect.

There really should be no discrimination when it comes to salaries. People should be based upon merit and not upon their nationality. this trend is apparent in other Gulf countries as well and i believe that it is unacceptable. One must, however, applaud Qatar for its incredible achievements in education.
