To the delight of most students, summer break is here. Some will be going off to beaches or skiing on soaring mountains, while others will be enjoying their free time at home swimming, watching television or playing video games.

Very few will be thinking about the important lessons they learned during the school year or about the new, exciting lessons that will begin in September. How do we help ensure that lessons are not forgotten and that learning continues during the summer even though our children are not in the classroom? How can we continue to advance our children’s learning through these restful summer months?

We would like to know how you are helping your children learn throughout the summer so that others can benefit. Share your creative ideas and success stories. Inspire us all to advance learning throughout the year! Some of our suggestions include:

  • Mandatory reading time each day – read to your young children, and encourage your older children to read for themselves.
  • Visit museums and other cultural institutions – help bring learning to life and make it fun.
  • Review your child’s report card and find areas that need some work. Talk about those topics and how they are relevant to important jobs and every day life.

Now it’s your turn. Let’s help our children learn every day. Have a safe and enjoyable summer.

I play educational games with my children and I do not buy them video games. We travel and we discover new things. We play games as a family and spend a lot of family time together.

I do the same with my children Dana. As a result, they love to read, we enjoy family time and have fun at the same time. So I recommend this method to all families.

My husband and I also play educational games with our son; asking him questions about what’s going on in the world today, the government and other general knowledge information. He has to read a chapter or two everyday and we play educational games on television and on family trips. He does play with his video games, but he has to earn it by answering questions correctly.
