The Education Institute of the Supreme Education Council in collaboration with the College of Education at Qatar University will co-sponsor Reflective Practice: The First Annual Conference on Action Research to be held on Saturday, June 21, 2008 at the Four Seasons Hotel from 8:30am to 3:00pm.

The conference is intended for educators who are interested in research and want to expand their knowledge about improving schools through action research.

The conference will open with welcoming remarks by Ms. Sabah Al Haidoos, Director of the Education Institute and Dean Hissa Mohd Sadiq, Dean of the College of Education. Following the welcome, Dr. Zoubeida Dagher, Professor and Deputy Dean at Qatar University and visiting scholar from the University of Delaware, USA, will give the keynote presentation. Dr. Dagher earned a B.S. in Science Education from Lebanese American University, a M.A. in Education from the American University of Beirut, and a Ph.D. in Science Education from the University of Iowa, USA. Dr. Dagher has had a distinguished career in science education.

Following the opening session, several breakout sessions will be held in which teachers, administrators, and graduate students will present the results of their action research projects conducted this year. In addition, researchers will display summaries of their projects in poster sessions.

The action research projects will come from all levels – primary, preparatory, secondary, and graduate studies – and will represent all disciplines – Science, Mathematics, English, Arabic Studies, Social Studies, and more.

A presentation will also be given on the National Professional Standards for Teachers project and the pilot work that was conducted this year.

Another feature of the conference will be an exhibit of the latest textbooks and professional resources for teachers.

The Supreme Education Council was established by Emiri decree in 2002. It serves as the primary authority on education policy in Qatar and, with its three Institutes, is leading the effort to transform the nation’s schools into a modern, world-class education system.
